How to Use Ubiquiti's UniFi Network Server to Manage Wireless Access Points and Switches
Step-by-Step Setup and Management Guide

Overview:
Ubiquiti’s UniFi Network Server software allows businesses and IT administrators to centrally manage UniFi wireless access points (APs), switches, and other network devices. This guide walks you through downloading, installing, and using the software effectively.

1. Download and Install the UniFi Network Server

  • Download the latest version of the UniFi Network Server from the official site:
    https://ui.com/download/releases/network-server

  • Install the software by running the installer on your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux). The installer includes necessary components like MongoDB.

  • After installation, open a browser and go to https://localhost:8443 to launch the UniFi Network application.

  • Note: Your browser may show a security warning due to a self-signed certificate. You can safely proceed past this warning.

  • Follow the setup wizard to create your account and complete the initial configuration.

2. Connect and Adopt Your UniFi Devices

  • Physically connect UniFi Access Points and switches to your network using Ethernet cables. Ensure devices are powered on.

  • Open the UniFi Network application and go to the Devices section.

  • Devices not yet adopted will appear as “Pending Adoption.” Click on each device and select Adopt. The controller will take care of configuration and integration into the network.

3. Configure Wireless Networks

  • Navigate to Settings > Wi-Fi.

  • Click Create New Wi-Fi Network and enter the following:

    • Network Name (SSID)

    • Security Protocol (e.g., WPA2)

    • Strong password

  • Optional: Adjust advanced settings such as band steering, transmit power, and minimum RSSI for performance optimization.

4. Create VLANs and Guest Networks

  • Go to Settings > Networks to define VLANs, allowing traffic segmentation across departments or devices.

  • Set up Guest Networks with restricted access. You can also enable features such as client isolation or captive portals for guest control.

5. Update Device Firmware

  • Under the Devices section, check for available firmware updates.

  • Select one or more devices and click Upgrade to apply the latest firmware for improved stability and security.

6. Monitor Network Health

  • Use the main Dashboard to view:

    • Real-time traffic and bandwidth usage

    • Number of connected clients

    • Alerts or disconnection issues

  • Set up Notifications for critical events such as device failure or network degradation.

7. Enable Remote Access and Backups

  • Link your UniFi Network application with a Ubiquiti account to allow cloud-based remote management.

  • Regularly create and store configuration backups. This is critical in case of system reinstallation or migration.

Best Practices

  • Always use strong passwords and keep firmware up to date.

  • Implement 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) for the UniFi Network admin interface.

  • Use VLANs to isolate sensitive systems and reduce security risks.

  • Monitor alerts regularly to identify and address issues early.

  • Remember to enable port isolation for the guest network.
