How to Select or Change Audio Devices in Microsoft Teams

If you're experiencing audio issues or want to switch between different microphones, headsets, or speakers, Microsoft Teams makes it easy to change your device settings before or during a meeting.

Before a Meeting: Change/Verify Audio Settings

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
Launch the app and make sure you're signed in.

  2. Click on your profile picture (top-right corner).
Then select Settings from the dropdown menu.

  3. Select “Devices” from the left-hand menu.
This is where you can manage your audio and video hardware.

  4. Under Audio Devices:

    • Choose your Speaker (e.g., built-in speakers, headset, external speakers).

    • Choose your Microphone (e.g., laptop mic, USB mic, headset mic).

    • Teams may auto-select a default device, but you can override it here.

  5. Make a Test Call (Optional):
Click “Make a test call” to confirm your devices are working properly.

During a Meeting: Change Audio On the Fly

  1. Join or start a meeting.

  2. Click on the ‘More actions’ (three dots) in the meeting toolbar.

  3. Select Device settings from the menu.

  4. On the right-hand panel, you can update:

    • Speaker

    • Microphone

    • Ringer (for incoming calls)

  5. Changes take effect immediately without needing to leave the meeting.

Tips & Troubleshooting

  • USB devices are usually recognized instantly by Teams. Replug them if not detected.

  • If you hear echoes, check that your speaker and mic aren’t too close together or switch to a headset.

  • Teams sometimes defaults back to a previous device—recheck settings if you switch hardware.
