Troubleshooting: Microsoft Surface Laptop Won't Boot

If your Microsoft Surface Laptop isn’t turning on, follow these steps to diagnose and resolve the issue.

1. Check Power and Charging

  • Ensure the Surface is plugged into a working power outlet.
  • Check if the charging light on the power connector is on.
    • If the light is off → Try a different power outlet or charger.
    • If the light is on → Let it charge for 15 minutes before attempting to power it on.

2. Force Restart the Surface

If your Surface appears unresponsive, try forcing a restart:

  1. Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  2. Release, then wait a few seconds and try turning it on normally.

3. Perform a Two-Button Reset

If a normal force restart doesn’t work:

  1. Press and hold the Power button + Volume Up button for 15 seconds.
  2. Release both buttons and wait for 10 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button again to turn it on.

4. Disconnect Accessories

  • Unplug any USB devices, docks, external monitors, or SD cards.
  • Try turning the Surface on again.

5. Boot to UEFI Mode (To Check for Hardware Issues)

  1. Press and hold Volume Up while pressing the Power button.
  2. Release Power when you see the Surface logo, but keep holding Volume Up.
  3. If UEFI loads, your Surface is fine, but Windows may have a problem. Try restarting it.

6. Try a Hard Reset

  1. Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  2. Release, then immediately hold Power + Volume Down for 15 seconds.
  3. Wait 10 seconds, then press Power again.
